Dear Reader,
Last semester, as my Diploma with TAFE was drawing to a close, I began to grow anxious with unused potential. The skills I learnt from my study are some of the most valuable one’s I had, but now I was faced with a challenge “what to do with them.” I was overflowing with ideas, what ifs, visions, pitches and a thousand and one things I knew I had to get out of my brain and out in the world someway and when talk of an advanced diploma went around, I knew I couldn’t pass it up.
I became infatuated, very quickly, with the idea of making a zine, when I learnt that the Advanced Diploma was project based. I spent weeks on end planning out an idea I not only didn’t have the go ahead for, but an idea for a class I wasn’t even yet enrolled in. My friend Laura would deal with this obsession, as I would send pictures, theme ideas, story concepts and anything else that popped into my brain when I couldn’t sleep at night.
When this began to grow, into something more than an idea; into a concept, into a pitch, into something tangible I could hold in my hands, I was beyond grateful. I never thought this would be something that people were not only willing, but eager to write for. Thanks to the support of the wonderful teaching staff at TAFE, my classmates and my friends, Spineless is already something I am looking at with such pride.
I want Spineless to be more than another abandoned project. Not just another inactive blog, or a scrap piece of paper abandoned in a draw, but something that’s here, present and lasting. I want to be able to leave a small piece of something in the world, a voice of not only us, but of you. Something that captures the humanity of all of us; a small snippet of what it is like to be here, now.
I am beyond grateful, that thanks to the incredible work of our team and everyone who contributed, Spineless can be something positive in the world. Despite being in our infancy, here at Spineless, I am only looking at the future with strong hopes.
So please, enjoy. Enjoy the works and talents of Spineless x Off Campus. Enjoy our first issue Something New, the first of many.
Most importantly, thank you for stopping by.
