Come Back/ Stay There

While there are some actors who have stood the test of time, there are others who failed to transition into the modern era, stuck in their time. In the 1990s and 2000s, these celebrities were at the peak of their careers. Since everyone loves a comeback, I’ve taken it upon myself to decide whether these actors should return to the big screen or stay right where they are.

Brendan Fraser

If you wanted to cast the lead in your family action-adventure flick, Fraser was your guy. His simple-minded George of the Jungle sparked everyone's sexual awakening and his role in ‘The Mummy’ series made him a superstar. The problem is, the kids who grew up admiring him, well, grew up and Fraser didn’t change genres.

Lucky for us, his comeback is already underway. After a short-acting hiatus in 2014, Fraser will appear in an upcoming Scorsese film and will play the lead in the drama, ‘The Whale.’ Sure he’ll be playing a morbidly obese man, but a job’s a job. Result: COME BACK

Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes. The legend. The icon. The enigma. When her eponymous Nickelodeon show ended, she did pretty well for herself, receiving praise for her performances in ‘She’s the Man’, ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Easy A’. Unfortunately, this newfound popularity was short-lived as she decided to focus on her mental health, putting her career on indefinite hold.

While a comeback would be absolutely legendary, Bynes hasn’t booked an acting gig in over a decade. But she doesn’t need to. She’s got that sweet Nickelodeon money. I think the Amanda ship has sailed and that’s probably in her best interest. Result: STAY THERE

Sarah Michelle Gellar

There’s no denying that SMG was an “it” girl. She was on the cover of every magazine during ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s run, her marriage to her ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ co-star Freddie Prinze, Jr. was highly publicised and people broke their VHS tapes watching the kiss scene in ‘Cruel Intentions.’ I believe Gellar’s decrease in popularity is a pretty shallow one. She is unproblematic. Which is a problem because having a stable marriage and a successful baking kit business doesn’t sell tickets. That being said, she and Prinze have made too big of a cultural impact and deserve another shot. Result: COME BACK

Macaulay Culkin

Probably one of the most recognised child stars of all time, Culkin was on a roll for a few years, fighting his uncle in ‘Uncle Buck’, fighting robbers in ‘Home Alone' and fighting bees in ‘My Girl.’ But all good things must come to an end, as they do with most child stars.

Culkin’s career might just be on the up and up. He was cast in the 10th season of ‘American Horror Story’ this year and will reprise his role of Kevin in the ‘Home Alone’ reboot on Disney+. Who knows? This may be the start of the Macaulaissance. Result: COME BACK

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

How do you solve a problem like Mary-Kate and Ashley? Entertainment’s most famous twins, best known for their role in ‘Full House’, a Playstation 2 game and their seemingly hundreds of direct-to-DVD movies. Also apparently they’re NOT identical twins. I don’t know when that bombshell dropped but surely that forced them into retirement.

Unfortunately for them, being a twin isn’t as cool as it once was. When your little sister, Elizabeth, has a huge fanbase from her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’d probably not want to return to acting either. Maybe they could score cameos as Scarlet Witch’s variants. Result: STAY THERE
